The Lafayette Farmhouse Inspired Remodel

We are so excited to mix up our project blog posting this time around to bring you a Q&A post from the homeowners of our latest finished project which was a whole house remodel in Lafayette.  Bethany and Mike are about the cutest couple you can imagine.  They are young and joyful and recently purchased their first home.  Bethany was kind enough to take a few minutes to answer a few of my questions about her project.  We are so happy with how it turned out and hope they enjoy it for years to come!

What areas of your home did you remodel?
​We did a full gut job on the kitchen, master bath, and fireplace. We also updated the laundry room, refinished the floors on the main floor and installed new carpet upstairs, and had a few smaller cosmetic updates done throughout!

Why did you decide to do these projects?
We bought our house knowing we wanted to make some major changes. The house had great bones (we especially loved the open floorplan), was located in the right neighborhood, and was the perfect size. But there wasn't much else about it that was our style. It needed a lot of work. We loved the idea of getting to "make it our own" and choosing exactly what we wanted. We also hope this house will be our "forever home" so we knew renovating would be a worthwhile long-term investment.

What are a few things you’re most proud of/excited about with your project?
Everything looks amazing, but I especially love how the double-sided fireplace turned out. It was my least favorite thing about the house when we bought it but had the most potential to be a total showstopper. Before, it was bulky and dark and had strange 90s-style cut-outs. Now it's a gorgeous white shiplap with antique-style brick and a built-in-bookcase beside it, AND it's double-sided so you can enjoy it from two different rooms. I love it so much! Our kitchen is also the farmhouse-style kitchen of my dreams, and it was incredibly rewarding to see my vision come to life after spending so much time on the design.

​What was something that was more challenging than you expected about doing a big remodeling project? 
It's extremely time-consuming! Even though it was super great to have someone else managing all the sub-contractors and details of the project (plug for hiring a GC!), there were SO. MANY. DECISIONS. I really had to convince myself daily that all the hours I was spending researching colors, fixtures, design elements, etc. would be worth it in the end. It was also stressful when things went wrong (which they inevitably will with a major project), so it's helpful to set your expectations ahead of time about things not going perfectly.

Where did you find most of your inspiration for the design/look of your project? 
Most of my inspiration came from Fixer Upper (which is the most cliche answer, but true!). I really like Joanna Gaines' style of design so I took a lot of inspiration from the show. I also spent hours on Pinterest (too many hours, probably) pinning photos that had elements of my style. Having photos for inspiration also makes it a lot easier to describe to the contractor/designer what you're wanting in a space--I was constantly pulling up photos and using them for reference.

What are a few of your favorite fixtures in your space? 
The freestanding bathtub and marble hex tile in the master bath. In the kitchen, the natural wood barn door and matching open shelves. All the light fixtures throughout the house that tie together. It's hard to pick only a few! I just love the cohesiveness of everything.

What advice would you give someone who is going to do a remodeling project? 
I mentioned this earlier, but keep your expectations in check. Don't freak out when something goes wrong or doesn't turn out exactly how you want -- more often than not, if you say something right away, it can be changed. Along those lines... if something looks wrong, speak up! At the end of the day, you are responsible for your project turning out the way YOU want it to. Don't compromise on quality: you've heard it before, but what you pay for is what you get. We knew we were paying more for higher quality work and a more attentive/trustworthy GC, and it was 100% worth it. Also, if you're doing a major remodel and can swing it, don't live in the house while the work is being done. We kept our apartment while we were renovating and it made it a million times easier on us, and really on everyone involved

We've now been living in our house for about a month and still can't believe it's ours! We are so grateful for Tom and Brook and the many sub-contractors they brought in to work on our home. We feel incredibly blessed to be living in our dream home and will enjoy it for years to come. Thank you, Bunn and Sons!
