Have you ever done a big project without instructions? Has your boss ever been vague about what he/she wants and then upset when you don't provide the expected results? Does your spouse/significant other ever expect you to read his/her mind?
That's frustrating, right? So is completing a construction project without formal plans. An architect or designer's plans are the key to a successful project. Why? Here are 3 reasons: 1. Over the course of your project, you'll have the general contractor, electrician, plumber, framer, sheet rocker, painter, cabinetry installer, flooring installer, tiler, etc. working on your project. Without a plan, you leave a lot to chance. The GC has to remember exactly what you want and then communicate that to all these different tradespeople. Imagine all that can go wrong in that telephone game! 2. To permit your project, plans are required. 3. Plans ensure that you understand what your final outcome will look like. And they help you keep your contractor accountable. Be wary of any contractor that doesn't require some kind of design plans. You could be in for a lot of miscommunication and frustration or even a final product that is different than what you wanted. Plans are a small investment upfront that help guarantee a positive outcome and a smoothly running project! +++ Bunn & Sons Home Renovations provides general contractor, kitchen and bath remodeling, basement finishing and custom carpentry services in the Broomfield, Louisville, Lafayette, Boulder, Westminster, Erie and other North Denver Metro areas. Unfortunately contractors don't always have the best reputation for integrity and follow through. One of our recent clients learned that the hard way. Instead of being left with a beautifully finished basement, the contractor he selected left him with an incomplete project, a drained bank account and many sleepless nights worrying about how he would ever fix the situation. Tom was able to come in after the fact and complete the project and hopefully redeem a frustrating and stressful situation, but we still felt terrible that he had such a bad experience with the first guy he hired to do the job. .
Here are five important things we learned from our client's bummer of an experience:
Finding a contractor who does quality work and thoroughly communicates during the process might be tough but it's worth it. While there are a lot of shady folks in this industry, there are an equal number of great people doing great work.
